Getting Started
What is Ration Lab?
Ration Lab is an AI-powered nutrition planning tool built for veterinary professionals. Enter a dog's profile — breed, weight, age, activity level, and health conditions — and get a complete, nutritionally balanced meal plan in under a minute. Every recipe is checked against all 38 essential nutrients before it reaches your client.
Who is this tool designed for?
Ration Lab is built for veterinary professionals — veterinarians, veterinary nutritionists, and veterinary technicians who want to offer homemade diet consultations. It is not intended for direct-to-consumer use; every recipe is meant to be reviewed and approved by a qualified veterinarian before being given to a client.
Does this work for cats or other species?
Ration Lab currently supports dogs only. Feline nutrition has different requirements and tolerances (for example, cats have a much lower threshold for certain nutrients and a strict need for taurine and arachidonic acid), so we want to get it right before expanding. Cat support is on our roadmap. For now, the tool is designed exclusively for canine diet formulation.
Do I need nutrition training to use it?
No specialized nutrition training is required. The tool handles the formulation math and nutrient balancing automatically. We recommend that a veterinarian reviews and approves every recipe before it is shared with a client — the tool is designed to support your clinical judgment, not bypass it.
How do I get started?
Ration Lab is currently in an invite-only beta. If your email has been invited, create an account and you'll be taken straight to the dashboard. If you don't have access yet, use the contact page and we'll let you know when invites open up.
Recipes & Nutrition
Is it safe to use AI-generated recipes for patients?
Every recipe is a starting point for your professional review, not a replacement for clinical judgment. The AI formulates against all 38 essential nutrients, flags deficiencies and excesses, and shows you the full compliance breakdown before you approve anything. You remain in control of every recommendation.
What nutrient standards are recipes checked against?
Recipes are validated against all 38 essential nutrients as defined by NRC (National Research Council) guidelines, a widely used reference in companion animal nutrition research. This includes macronutrients, minerals, vitamins, amino acids, and fatty acids. The compliance dashboard shows you exactly how each nutrient measures up.
Where does the ingredient nutrient data come from?
Our ingredient database is sourced primarily from USDA FoodData Central, supplemented with manufacturer-provided data for supplements and premixes. Each ingredient profile includes energy, macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and fatty acids. The database is reviewed and updated regularly.
How many ingredients are available?
The database includes over 8,500 ingredients commonly used in canine diets, spanning whole foods, proteins, grains, vegetables, fruits, oils, supplements, and premixes. If you need an ingredient that isn't listed, contact support and we'll work to add it.
Can I adjust a recipe after it's generated?
Yes. You can chat with the AI to refine any recipe — swap ingredients, adjust for allergies, change portion sizes, or ask why something was included. Every change automatically recalculates nutrient compliance in real time so you can see the impact immediately.
What if a client can't find a specific ingredient?
The AI can suggest substitutions that maintain nutritional balance. Just tell it which ingredient needs to be replaced and it will recommend alternatives, recalculating compliance automatically so the recipe stays on target.
Does it support special dietary needs (renal, weight loss, etc.)?
Yes. When you enter a dog's health conditions — such as kidney disease, obesity, food allergies, or joint issues — the AI adjusts the formulation to account for those needs. The nutrient targets shift based on the condition, and the compliance panel reflects the adjusted requirements.
Does it work for puppies, seniors, and different life stages?
Yes. Nutrient requirements vary by life stage, so the tool adjusts targets based on the dog's age, weight, and expected adult size. Growing puppies, adult maintenance, and senior dogs each have different formulation parameters.
What happens if a recipe doesn't meet all nutrient targets?
The compliance dashboard clearly flags any nutrient that falls below or exceeds the target range. You can still view and work with the recipe, but deficiencies and excesses are highlighted so you can address them — either by chatting with the AI to adjust ingredients or by making manual changes. The tool does not silently pass a non-compliant recipe as complete.
How It Compares
How is this different from BalanceIT or manual spreadsheets?
Unlike static spreadsheet tools, Ration Lab uses AI to formulate complete recipes from scratch rather than just checking nutrient targets against a manually assembled ingredient list. You can also refine any recipe through natural conversation — swap ingredients, adjust for allergies, or ask why something was included — and the AI recalculates compliance instantly. And unlike per-recipe pricing models, you get unlimited recipes at a flat monthly rate.
Can this replace a board-certified veterinary nutritionist?
No. Ration Lab is a clinical tool that helps veterinarians provide nutrition consultations more efficiently, but it does not replace the expertise of a board-certified veterinary nutritionist (DACVN). For complex or unusual cases, referral to a specialist is always appropriate.
Why should I trust an AI over doing the formulation myself?
The AI doesn't ask you to trust it blindly. Every recipe comes with a full nutrient compliance breakdown showing exactly how each of the 38 essential nutrients measures up against established requirements. You see the same data you'd calculate manually — just faster. The tool does the math; you make the clinical decisions.
Is there any published validation or peer review?
Recipes are validated against NRC nutrient guidelines, and the tool was developed with input from practicing veterinary nutritionists. Independent peer-reviewed validation has not yet been published. We welcome review from the veterinary nutrition community and are open to collaboration on formal evaluation.
Billing & Account
How much does it cost?
Ration Lab is $300/month per person. There are no per-recipe fees, no tiers, and no upsells.
Is there billing during the beta?
Not right now. During the invite-only beta there is no billing flow. We'll announce pricing and subscription details before billing is turned on.
Is pricing per person or per clinic?
Per person. Each team member uses their own account.
What if I have multiple clinic locations?
If you're managing multiple locations, each person still has their own account. If you need a consolidated plan later, contact us.
Can I cancel at any time?
Yes. When billing is enabled, you'll be able to cancel from your account settings.
What payment methods do you accept?
When billing goes live, we'll support major credit cards.
Data & Security
Is my patient data private and secure?
All data is encrypted in transit and at rest. Patient profiles and recipes are isolated per account and never shared across accounts. Your data is not used to train AI models. We do not sell or share your information with third parties.
Can other clinics see my recipes or patient data?
No. There is no shared access between accounts. Your recipes, patient profiles, and conversation history are visible only to your account.
Is my data used to train the AI?
No. Your patient data, recipes, and conversations are never used to train or fine-tune AI models. Your information stays private to your account.
Reports & Exports
Can I add my clinic branding to the PDF reports?
Yes. Exported nutrition reports include your clinic name, logo, and contact information on every page of the document. Clients see a professional report from your practice, not from a third-party tool.
What's included in the PDF export?
Each report includes the complete ingredient list with quantities, a feeding guide with daily portions and meal splitting, the full nutrient compliance breakdown, and any preparation instructions. It's designed to be a document your client can follow at home.
Can I access past recipes?
Yes. Every recipe you generate is saved to the patient's profile. You can review, re-export, or use a previous recipe as a starting point for a new consultation at any time.
